You know those 3 Musketeers commercials, where the bar floats up in the air, and chocolate-crazed women reach desperately for it, knowing it is their one shot at a sane world? That's also my wallet after a fall game line-up.
Too Human came out yesterday. If it were wine, it would be considered a nice vintage, seeing as it's been in development since the PSone. The demo was fun and the game will be worth playing for, if nothing else, the silly item names. I want the Epic Flame Pauldrons of the Weeping Maiden +10. And that's one of the shorter names. This is likely a rental, sadly. At least it's not laughably bad like Daikatana, and it actually made it onto shelves unlike Duke Nukem Forever.
Next comes Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. I'm waiting for some reviews but it looks to be fun in much the same way Crackdown was - over-the-top sandbox-style action, tons of explosions, and a gorgeous backdrop against which to make mayhem. This is another rental for now, but if it's enough fun it may be a keeper.
In September, the first worthwhile game to hit will be SimDesigner Will Wright's Spore on September 7th. Spore has the potential to take lives. I mean, take people away from their lives. For a very, very long time. It could also be really boring, but Will Wright's track record with habit-forming games is too strong for me to expect anything but the best. As this is a PC game primarily, chances are good that I'll be purchasing it.
Just a scant week later, the next addictive title hits the shelves: Rock Band 2. Songs like Metallica's Battery, Eye of the Tiger, Foo Fighters' Everlong and Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way ensure that I'll be rocking out for at least a few weeks just on my own- not counting all the people we'll force to play drums and guitar so I can live out my rockstar fantasies. No way I'm not buying this - the question is, will I buy the new guitar as well?
Also, I hope people tell me if my singing sucks...
Anyway, two days later is The Force Unleashed. This is almost guaranteed to be awesome based on the videos I've seen, but the demo hitting tonight (Wednesday) will tell us with much more certainty than the sweet videos floating about the tubes. If it is everything a nerd hopes for, then we'll finally have something to stand next to KOTOR and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. Whether I buy this will depend largely on the demo.
Later that month is LEGO Batman, which I'll be renting.
More importantly, on the last day of September comes Silent Hill: Homecoming. My distant hope is that this game signals a return to grace for the Silent Hill series. Silent Hill 4 was just abysmal. I guess it wasn't a bad game in its own right, but it was never meant to be a Silent Hill game and never FELT like a Silent Hill game. My memories of Silent Hill 2 still hold strong and anything that begins to approach that would be awesome. Even just meeting the gore standard set by SH3 would be nice, but I'm really hoping for a worthwhile story. I'll almost certainly be buying it, but reviews may temper that. I hope Zeropunctuation's Yahtzee reviews it as soon as possible. I know he's another Silent Hill nerd, so his opinion is one I can trust.
More on the fall line-up in a later post. Fallout 3, how I wish for thee...
