Volume 1 of Vagabond, Takehiko Inoue's epic story of legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto, opens simply with Musashi - still the teenager known as Shinmen Takezo - lying in the rain, his mouth open. Takezo lies amidst the aftermath of the Battle of Sekigahara, one of the few survivors on the losing side of the battle that led to the ascension of the Tokugawa shogunate that would rule for more than two hundred years.
